In the late '70s and early '80s, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) was the place to get restriction enzymes. Scientists attending meetings at CSHL would bring tubes of DNA. During breaks they would visit Rich Roberts' lab to test their DNA with his stock of enzymes.
Restriction enzymes are isolated mostly from bacteria. Why would bacteria need restriction enzymes at all?
